Collection & recycling of water
Investigate the potential for strategic water saving using rain water collection and grey water recycling.
- re-use water from cooling/refrigeration for irrigation or cleaning purposes (3 - page 79)
- use process wastewater as cooling water, where appropriate (5, 10 - section 5)
- collection and use of rainwater for non-potable uses, e.g. WC flushing, cleaning etc (8 - FactSheet 4, 4 - section 8, 7 - section 2.3, 2)
- recycling and re-use of greywater for non-potable uses, e.g. WC flushing, cleaning etc (8 - FactSheet 3)
- seek the advice of a rainwater / greywater specialist to avoid contamination problems, such as backflow, appropriate storage etc (4 - paragraph 5.7, 7 - section 4, 2 - section 4)
- all rainwater/greywater access points (taps etc) are clearly marked to avoid occupant confusion (4 - paragraph 7.4, 7 - section 4.2, 2 - section 3)
- size tanks for collection of rainwater / greywater on the predicted availability (1 - credit W5, 7 - section 2.3)
- water butts for collecting rainwater for irrigation (8 - FactSheet 4)
- untreated greywater from wash basins and WCs for garden watering (8 - FactSheet 3, 10 - section 5)
